Sep 25, 2026
Punjab Congress President and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring led a massive protest in Chandigarh on September 25, 2026, as thousands of Congress workers gathered to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters raised slogans against the CEC and the central government, alleging that the electoral process was being undermined. Addressing the gathering, Raja Warring alleged that the Election Commission under Gyanesh Kumar had compromised the credibility of the electoral process and demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab be scrapped. He said the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections should be conducted using the electoral rolls used during the parliamentary elections, while stressing that no genuine voter should be deprived of the right to vote. Warring also raised concerns over the registration process for first-time voters and the requirements under Form-6, arguing that these conditions could make it difficult for young and eligible voters to register. Former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and several senior Punjab Congress leaders also participated in the protest.
